Abstract
1,111,649. Melt spinning apparatus. FUJI BOSEKI KABUSHIKI KAISHA. 30 June, 1966 [8 July, 1965], No. 29433/66. Heading B5B. An apparatus for melt spinning synthetic filaments, comprises at least one ring-shaped infra-red ray heater 3, which is circular in cross-section and is disposed in the upper part of a spinning shaft 2, and an inverted truncated conical tank 10, for cooling liquid arranged below the spinning shaft and coaxially therewith. As shown, filaments extruded from spinneret 1 are momentarily heated and fused by the ring-shaped heater 3, and passed through the cooling liquid tank without any alteration in their direction of movement, wound around the stretching roll arrangement 14 and then passed under idler roll 17 to a wind-up roll 16 which is driven by a driving roll 15. The infra-red ray heater 3 suitably consists of an annular quartz tube having a circular cross-section and containing a "Nichrome" (Registered Trade Mark) wire hermetically sealed therein. As indicated in broken lines in Fig. 1, a plurality of such heaters may be used. The inner wall of the spinning shaft 2 surrounding the heaters 3 is formed with a large number of exhaust ports 4, which communicate outwardly through circular perforated baffle plates 5 to an exhaust duct 6 (Fig. 2). On the bottom of the cylinder is provided an air intake plate 7, and a jacket 8 for heat insulation is mounted on the top of the cylinder. A ring-shaped heater has a far lower drag against exhausting gases than the hollow cylindrical type of heater conventionally used, so that the volatile gases developed on spinning are exhausted effectively without causing sticking among the filaments, thus prolonging spinneret life. Further, the filaments in the unsolidified state are cooled solid by water or other liquid without any alteration in the direction of movement thereof and said cooling liquid reduces or eliminates undesired sideways vibration of the filament and permits the use of a shorter spinning cylinder. High molecular weight substances useful in the process of the invention include homopolymers e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, and polyethylene, and copolymers and mixtures thereof. Examples describe the spinning of polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polyethylene, polycarbonate, and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins.
