Abstract

1,240,099. Apparatus for quenching melt spun filaments. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 24 Feb., 1970 [7 March, 1969], No. 8944/70. Heading B5B. As shown in Fig. 1, an apparatus for quenching melt extruded filaments of a synthetic organic polymeric thermoplastic material comprises an entry chamber 1 for a cooling gas (preferably air) formed by outer cylindrical neoprene rubber bellows 2 which surrounds an inner cylindrical neoprene rubber bellows 3 in a concentric manner thereby forming a gas entry chamber of annular cross-section. Cooling gas entering the chamber 1 is passed through filter felt 4 and then through perforations in the wall of a perforated metal cylinder 5 into a porous, multi-cellular, polymeric foam diffuser 6. The cooling gas is diffused in diffuser 6 and enters quench chamber 7 as a substantially non- turbulent stream before quenching filaments 8 extruded from spinneret assembly. The cooling gas then passes downward through quench chamber 7 into and through the cooling stack 10 and is discharged therefrom. The filaments emerging from the stack 10 are drawn and collected in take-up means 11. Spinneret 9 is surrounded by a cylindrical wall 12 which surrounds and encloses the filaments which are extruded from spinneret 9. The rubber bellows 2 is connected to the inner flange 13 of the wall 12 and the metal cylinder 5 is connected to the inner flange 14 of the wall 12. The bottom of the cylinder 5 is connected to the outer flange 15 at the top of the stack 10 which serves as a further cooling chamber for the quenched filaments. The inner bellows 3 is connected to the upper part of the stack 10. The filter felt 4, which may be of woven or non-woven felt material, is wrapped around the metal cylinder 5 and serves to provide a means for producing an additional pressure drop across the diffuser 6 and to filter dust from the cooling gas prior to its entry into the chamber 7. The diffuser 6 is held in place by a flange 17 at the bottom of the wall 12 and a flange 18 at the top of the stack 10. The diffuser 6 can be cut from porous bulk material or can be fabricated from slab stock. It may be preferably ¢ to 2 inches thick and have a length (generally parallel to the axis of the quenching chamber) of preferably 6 to 24 inches. The diffuser 6 has preferably 75 to 150 cells per linear inch and a cellular void volume of preferably 75 to 97% of its total volume. The bulk density of the polymeric foam of which the diffuser consists is preferably 1À4 to 6 lbs per cubic foot and the foam may be flexible or rigid. The preferred diffuser material is a polyurethane foam, but it may be a polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl acetate foam, or a natural or synthetic foam rubber.
