Abstract

[Also in Division H1] A machine for punching openings in the partition walls of an electrical storage battery case comprises a support for the battery case, a plurality of punching stations corresponding to the number of partition walls in the battery case and each including punching means, and means for actuating the plurality of punching means. As shown in Fig. 2, punching stations 46, 46a, 46b, 46c and 46d of a punch assembly 30 are supported on a bed 18 and releasably connected to an hydraulic operator assembly 20. Guide rods 56, 58, 60 and 62 extend through the punching stations and are secured to a first actuator bar 90 which is secured to and movable with a second actuator bar 104 to which is connected a T-shaped bar 114 adapted to fit in a notch in a block 26 to form a connection between the hydraulic assembly 20 and punch assembly 30. Each punching station comprises a punch shear support block 64 secured to and movable with the guide rods and having threaded thereinto a shear punch 70 extending through a stripper plate 74 which is fixed to a die support block 76 fixed to a punch plate 80 and carrying a split mounting block 84 supporting a die 82. Punching stations 46, 46a, 46c and 46d are provided with adjustable arms 120, 122, 124 and 126 for positioning the partition walls of the battery case with respect to the punches and dies. The battery case is held down on the punch plate 80 by means of a spring-influenced plate assembly operable by cams on a shaft 160 rotatable by a handle 196. To prevent the hydraulic mechanism 20 being actuated before the battery case is properly seated in the punching stations, a switch 202 de-energizes the mechanism 20 until the switch is operated by a cam on the shaft 160. The stations 46 &c. punch holes in walls disposed parallel to the end walls of the battery case. To enable holes to be punched in walls parallel to the side walls of the battery case, an alternative hydraulic mechanism 214, Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 (not shown), similar to the mechanism 20 is also provided with a releasable connection between the punch and hydraulic assemblies so that the punch assembly 30 of Fig. 2 can be removed from the apparatus and a different punch assembly (216), Fig. 7, provided. The mechanism 214 is supported on a shelf 217.
