Abstract
1,111,452. Actuation of switches; gas blast switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 10 May, 1966 [12 May. 1965], No. 20099/65. Heading H1N. An operating mechanism for a plurality of gas blast switches (Fig. 5, not shown) is arranged to be unaffected by expansion or contraction of a metal enclosure 12. The enclosure 12 takes the form of a compressed air reservoir and supports a plurality of series connected switching heads (30) upon branched insulating columns 14. The heads may be of the kind described in Specifications 1,023,151 or 1,080,354. The operating mechanism contained within the reservoir consists of a control device 15, a beam 20 rigidly fixed to the housing of device 15 and supported at other points by pivoted links 23 allowing relative expansion between the beam and the enclosure 12. The device 15 operates, through a crank 17 a series of rods 19 having substantially the same coefficient of expansion as the beam and moving parallel to the beam. The rods 19 are coupled, through bell cranks 21 pivoted to the beam, to insulating rods 25 passing up through the insulators 14 to operate the switches. In a three phase arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown), the three control devices 15 may be coupled together.
