Abstract
1,111,326. Shaft seals. FORSHEDA GUMMIFABRIK, A.B. 8 Sept., 1965 [11 Sept., 1964], No. 38344/65. Heading F2B. An elastomeric sealing ring 11 for a rotary shaft 21 where it extends through a wall 23 comprises an annular sealing lip 17 which, in the free state of the ring as in Fig. 1, is partly separated from an integral fastening ring portion 16 by an annular cut 18 passing through the major portion of the ring section, the diameter of the shaft being greater than the internal diameter of the ring 11 whereby when the latter is expanded on the shaft, as in Fig. 3, the lip 17 folds about its connection 20 with the portion 16 and bears with an edge 22 against the wall 23. The ring 11 is bevelled at 19 at the juncture of its inner periphery 13 and the lip end surface 15. In modifications (Figs. 4 and 5) the end surfaces are conical and the cut may be either plane, or parallel to one of the end faces. In another modification (Fig. 7) the sealing ring (71) has an integral sealing lip (77) at each end. In a further modification (Fig. 10) the fastening ring portion (116) is reinforced by a metal ring (109, 110) located in a cut (108) and serving to prevent the portion (116) becoming loose in the shaft (121) at high speeds. Rings (31, Fig. 8), may be made from a rubber tube (30) which is advanced stepwise on a rotating mandrel (32) the bevel (39) being ground by a wheel (34), the cut for the lip (37) being made by a knife (35) and the ring being parted from the tube by a further knife (38).
