A mineral-mining cutter drum construction toallow of reduction in weight comprises supporting a pick box-carrying helical strip on the outer ends of hollow members, e.g. rods, extending radially from and disposed in a helix about a central sleeve with the spaces between adjacent rods, the strip, and the sleeve being filled in by flat plates to form a scroll conveying surface to the drum at the outer end of which boxes for sumping picks are mounted on an apertured plate or radial arms secured between a circular rim and the sleeve to form the end surface of the drum.
