Abstract

Pyridine or substituted pyridines are made by interacting glutaraldehyde, a substituted glutaraldehyde or a precursor thereof in the liquid phase with ammonium ions or ammonia in the presence of molecular oxygen and cupric ions, the partial pressure of oxygen being at least 15 lb/square inch. Suitable precursors are, for example, the cyclic enol-acetals of glutaraldehyde and substituted glutaraldehyde e.g. 2 - alkoxy - 3,4 - dihydro - 2H - pyrans, particularly those in which the alkyl group contains up to 6 carbon atoms. The ammonium ions may be introduced in the form of an ammonium salt. The reaction mixture may comprise water and/or an organic solvent, in particular an alkanoic acid. The cupric ions are preferably introduced in the form of a cupric salt but may be produced in situ by the oxidation of a cuprous salt.
