Abstract

Butene-1 is isomerized to butene-2 in the presence of isobutylene by passage over a supported nickel catalyst, the nickel being present under operating conditions in major proportion as elemental nickel, and the catalyst having previously been modified by treatment with one or more of (a) elemental sulphur, (b) an organic sulphur compound, (c) H2S or (d) CS2, the treatment being so conducted as to give a sulphur : nickel atomic ratio in the treated catalyst in the range 0.01-0.4. Suitable compounds (b) are thiophenes, thiacycloalkanes, dialkyl monosulphides, mercaptans, and di-alkyl disulphides. The catalyst support may be sepiolite, kieselguhr or chalk. The isomerization is preferably carried out in the presence of hydrogen, and any acetylenes and/or dienes in the feed are then selectively hydrogenated to the corresponding mono-olefins. In an Example, a C4 stream containing inter alia butene-1, butene-2, isobutylene and butadiene was isomerized as above, the butene-1 being converted to butene-2, the isobutylene remaining unchanged, and the butadiene being selectively hydrogenated to n-butene. References has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,002,394.
