Abstract
The selective hydrogenation of diolefins present in minor quantity in a C4-C5 hydrocarbon stream containing monoolefins is accomplished by passing the hydrocarbon stream with hydrogen over a sulphided cobalt molybdate catalyst at 200 DEG -700 DEG F. and maintaining sufficient hydrogen sulphide pressure to maintain the catalyst in a sulphided state such that the molar ratio of sulphur to cobalt plus molybdenum is at least 1. The mol. ratio of hydrogen to dienes may be 3-40:1, the pressure 1-25 atmospheres and the LHSV up to 12 vols./vol./hr. The catalyst may contain prior to sulphidation, 8-18% of mixed molybdenum and cobalt oxides in a weight ratio of about 4:1 to 5:1. Nickel or chromium oxide may also be present. Freshly sulphided there should be no oxygen remaining bound to molybdenum or cobalt. Preferably the sulphur to cobalt and molybdenum ratio is maintained by maintaining a partial pressure of hydrogen sulphide of at least 1/500 of the hydrogen partial pressure but preferably not above 1% by weight of the unsaturated hydrocarbons; preferred amounts are 0,005-0,01% by weight of the hydrocarbon feed.
