An apparatus for folding and securing flat covers 8 on boxes 4, has a pair of bars 27 and a pair of angle-plates 33 spaced above the bars which overlie opposite edges of the cover 8 and fold the edges down as the box is raised past them and includes means for securing the covers of the box by staples, tacks, adhesive, heat sealing, crimpling &c. The boxes 4 are of tray form with pillars 7 at each corner and the covers 8 have holes 9 through which the pillars extend. The covers are placed on the boxes, which are gravity delivered end first to the apparatus 1 by a sloping conveyer 2. The edges of the covers pass between guides 22 and gluing rollers 17, 18, the roller 17 rotating when the box rotates free rollers 13. The box is moved on to the frame by motor-driven rollers 10, 11 and when it hits a stop 16, a switch 47 activates a pneumatic piston 24 which raises a stop 25 to prevent another box entering the apparatus. A pneumatic lift 26 then raises the box 4 on a platform 15 past the pair of bars 27, which fold two opposite sides of the cover down against the box. Each corner of the box then contacts an arm 31 of a bell-crank lever 28, causing the other arm 29 of the lever to fold the cover and form a gusset. The lower edges 34 of the pair of angle-plates 33 then fold down the cover flanges adjacent the box sides. The folds and gussets are pressed down at each corner by brushes (not shown). The plates 33 are pivoted and urged by springs 39 so to turn as the box 4 bears against the brushes 38 on the undersides of their inwardly directed bars (36), Fig. 2 (not shown), and press the flanges against the side of the box 4. As the box 4 rises above the plates 33, the plates are turned inwards by their springs to make ledges which retain the box when the platform 15 is lowered. When a second box is raised, it lifts the first box and when there are three boxes resting on the plates 33 the top box contacts a switch 48 which sends a signal to a pneumatic ram 41 connected to an ejector plate 42 which pushes the boxes on to a conveyer 6. Brushes 45, 48 serve to position the boxes in the frame 1. The apparatus is pneumatically controlled, the direction of travel of the ramp 26 being changed when it contacts a switch (not further described).
