Abstract
854,093. Box-making machines. S. & S. CORRUGATED PAPER MACHINERY CO. Inc. Sept. 2, 1958 [Sept. 6, 1957], No. 28109/58. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XVII] An automatic machine for transforming sheets into scored, slotted and folded box blanks, comprises a cutting section and a folding section, the cutting section having a plurality of sets of cutting heads positioned in the feed path of the blanks as they pass through the machine, and individual power-driven means operatively associated with at least one of the sets of cutting heads and the folding section for simultaneous adjustment thereof laterally with respect to the feed path of the blanks. Individual sheets S, Fig. 2, having score lines 80, 81 are fed from a feed-in section 11, Fig. 1, through feed rollers 17, 18 into a cutting section 100 where a first group of laterallyaligned cutting heads applies score lines 82 to 84 and crushes areas 85, 86. Thereafter, a second group of laterally-aligned cutting heads slots sheet S at 94 to 97 and trims it at 88 to form a box blank B. The box blank passes from the cutting section into a glueing and folding section 300 where glue is applied to the crushed flap 89 and panels 90, 91 are folded over until the crushed area 86 overlies the glued flap 89 thereby forming a folded tubular box T. The tubular box is then passed to a stacking section 400 to become the bottom box of a stack 92 from which a pusher 401 removes a stack 93 containing a predetermined number of folded tubular boxes. The cutting section 100 comprises stationary frame members 101, 102, Fig. 5, between which extend rods 103 to 106 on which carriers 107 to 110 are slidably mounted. The carriers are each in upper and lower parts and are operatively connected to rotatable cutter heads 117 to 120. Lateral movement of the upper and lower parts of the carriers is effected by means of lead screws 131 to 134 and 143 to 146. After ejection from the cutting section, the box blank B is engaged by moving conveyer belts 301, 302 beneath sets of rollers 304 to 307. Glue stored in a drum 308 is fed through tube 309 to glue applying means 310 where gluing roller 311 applies glue to the flap 89. Thereafter, the blank B is engaged by moving folding belts 313, 314 which fold the blank along the score lines 82, 84 until the crushed area 86 contacts the glued flap 89. Rollers 304, 306 are secured to a member 315 which depends from an upper frame member 325, Fig. 4, which is secured at one end to the upper part of the carrier 108. Similarly, the rollers 305, 307 are secured to a member 316 which depends from a frame member 326 which is secured at one end to the upper part of the carrier 109. Lower frame members 317, 318 are secured to the lower parts of the carriers 108, 109. The belts 301, 302 are driven by means of rollers 320, 321, Fig. 5, keyed to a shaft 350 extending between stationary frame members 352, 353. The folding belts 313, 314 are driven by rollers 327, 328 keyed to a shaft 351 extending between the frame members 352, 353 and laterally movable on the upper frame members 325, 326. The folded tubular box T is passed from the gluing and folding section to a stacking section similar to that described in Specification 835,174. Safety side gauges 420, Fig. 4, extend downwardly from horizontal members 421 secured to each of the frame members 325, 326. Should a side gauge be deflected from its normally vertical position by the tipping of the stack 92 caused by jamming of the stacking section, a switch is opened to stop the machine. Power is supplied from a motor 40 and main drive shaft 41, Fig. 3, to the various sections 11, 100, 300, 400 to convey the blanks through the machine. Each carrier 107 to 110 is driven for lateral adjustment of its associated cutting heads by means of individual motors 501 to 504 respectively, which are selectively controllable from a control panel 505, Fig. 3, the control panel being mounted on the end of a swivel pendant 506 to permit the operator to directly view the cutting heads as they are being adjusted or else view a remote position indicating means. These indicating means comprise a fixed scale 507, Fig. 3, secured to the frame members 101, 102 and movable scales 508, 509 secured to the upper parts of the carriers 108, 109 respectively. Pointers 510 to 513 extend from the carriers 107 to 110 to indicate the positions of the cutting heads associated with the respective carriers. Motor 501 drives a sprocket wheel 516, Fig. 5, which drives a chain 517 in turn driving sprocket wheels 518, 519 secured to lead screws 132, 143 respectively so as to move laterally the upper and lower parts of the carrier 107. Similarly, the motor 504 drives a chain and sprocket wheels secured to lead screws 131, 146 so as to move laterally the upper and lower parts of the carrier 110. The glue applying means 310 is secured to the lower part of the carrier 110 so that the gluing roller 311 will automatically be in a position to engage the flap 89. The motors 502, 503 are mounted at the top of a tower 520, Fig. 1. Sprocket wheel 521 on the shaft of motor 502 drives a chain 530 which through sprocket wheels and a further chain 534 drives sprocket wheels 535, 536 keyed to lead screws 133, 144 respectively. This effects lateral movement of the upper and lower parts of the carrier 108 and hence of the left-hand ends of the frame members 317, 325, Fig. 4. Sprocket wheel 522 on the shaft of motor 502 drives a chain 540 which in turn drives a further chain to drive sprocket wheels keyed to lead screws 596, 597, Fig. 5, that are in driving engagement with the right-hand ends of the frame members 317, 325. As the carrier 108 is moved laterally, one of the side gauges 420 is automatically moved laterally therewith. Similarly, sprocket wheel 525 on shaft of motor 503 drives a chain 550 to drive a further chain and sprocket wheels keyed to lead screws 134, 145 respectively so as to bring about lateral movement of the upper and lower parts of the carrier 109 and of the left-hand ends of the frame members 326, 318. The other ends of these frame members are moved by means of a sprocket wheel 524 on the shaft of motor 503 which drives a chain 560 in turn driving a further chain and sprocket wheels keyed to lead screws 567, 568. The other side gauge 420 is automatically adjusted laterally as the carrier 109 is laterally adjusted.
