Abstract
1,110,337. Connecting rungs to sides. A. W. MINSHALL. 26 July, 1965 [5 April, 1965], No. 31810/65. Heading A6L. [Also in Division B3] A hollow rung 10 is secured to the side wall 28 of a metal ladder by forming a flanged opening 48 in the side wall, providing an abutment 12 adjacent one end through the opening and curling it over the flange at 56. The ladder is preferably made of aluminium alloy and the abutments 12 are formed adjacent each end of each rung by clamping the latter between jaws 16 actuated by cylinders (18), Fig. 1 (not shown), and upsetting the abutments 12 by end dies (20) actuated by cylinders 24. The openings (34), Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) are punched in the side wall by punches (30) which also form radial grooves (42) extending outwardly from the opening; the latter is then flanged at (48), Fig. 4 (not shown). Curling over of the end of the ring is effected by a die 52 and simultaneously the flange 48 is deformed outwardly. The side rail 28 may be a plane member.
