ETIENNE JACOB HOLTZER. 8 June, 1965 [16 July, 1964; 11 Jan., 1965], No. 24288/65. Headings F4B, F4J and F4X. Apparatus for the controlled recovery of converter gases comprises a hood 3 having a downwardly depending skirt 4 attached thereto by a flexible apron 6 which overhangs the converter nose 2 by about 1 metre and does not form a fluid-tight seal therewith, the ratio of the skirt bottom diameter to that of the converter nose being in the range 1À5 to 2À5. A series of pressure measuring points 10 in a calm zone within the top of the skirt cooperates with an external measuring point in the same plane to activate a damper 12 via a draught regulator 11 to keep the pressure difference inside and outside the hood constant, the damper being prevented from closing completely by stops 15, 16 which act in the limit position to cut out the regulator automatically. The damper is situated downstream of a dust extractor 14 and upstream of a chimney (13) Fig. 3 (not shown). A fan in the chimney opens the damper when blast commences. At the blowing through stage, the damper closes and a reduced inspired gas flow in the hood ensues, at the end of blowing-through, collection of the converter gases without combustion is obtained. At the end of the refining period, the exhaust gas flow is reduced and the damper is closed until the end of the blast, when it opens to blow-through the installation. In order to tilt the converter, the skirt is raised by any known means, the flexible apron bending back on itself to facilitate this.
