Abstract

Rub-proof, stain-proof, water-resistant liquid make-up cosmetic compositions for application to the skin, and including eye-liners and eye-shadows, comprise a neutral stable aqueous dispersion (i.e. pH of 6.5 to 8) of (a) a non-toxic water-insoluble addition polymer, (b) a polyhydric alcohol humectant, (c) 5-20% w/v of a pharmaceutically acceptable finely divided inert pigment and (d) at least 0.5% w/v of a finely divided inorganic silicate. Polymers used include polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyral, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate and vinyl pyrrolidone-vinyl acetate co-polymers and polyacrylic esters e.g. methyl methacrylate-ethyl acrylate co-polymer and interpolymers of ethyl and butyl acrylate with butyl methacrylate and also optionally methacrylic acid. At least 3% w/v of a pharmaceutically acceptable surface active agent, preferably anionic, and at least 1% w/v of an oleaginous emollient, e.g. mineral and vegetable oils, may be present. The humectant may be ethylene, propylene, butylene, diethylene, triethylene or dipropylene glycols, polyethylene glycols, sorbitol or glycerine and at least 2.5% w/v is generally present. Various magnesium, calcium, aluminium and magnesium-aluminium silicates or SiO2 itself are among the silicates which may be used. Other optional ingredients include emulsion stabilizers (e.g. glyceryl monostearate), alkyl myristates, preservatives or fungistats e.g. ortho phenyl phenol, sorbic acid or its salts, tetrachlorosalicylanilide or p-chloro phenyl glycerol ether), perfumes, antiseptics (e.g. hexachlorophene, resorcinol, allantoin, sulphur preparations and medicaments for the treatment of acne), stimulants for peripheral circulation and sun screen agents.
