Abstract

Therapeutic compositions for application to the skin in the treatment of acne comprise a suspension of an inorganic abrasive having a harness greater than 7, as measured by Moh's index, being non-piezo-electric and having a particle size distribution within the range of 125 microns to 710 microns, in a non-oleaginous paste comprising a surface active agent and a solvent therefor, which is non-poisonous and non-irritating to the skin. The preferred abrasive is fused, synthetic aluminium oxide and the surface active agent may be cationic, anionic or non-ionic. The solvent is preferably water but may also be an organic liquid. An emollient may be included in the non-oleaginous paste, e.g. lanolin, glycerine, polyethylene glycol or a fatty acid ester of polyethylene glycol. Other optional ingredients which may be included are pigments, bentonite, and bactericides, e.g. hexachlorophene, 3, 4, 41-trichlorocarbanilide and bithionol. In a course of treatment for acne, a coordinated series of compositions according to the invention may be used, in which the proportion of coarse to fine particles of the abrasive and the proportion of abrasive to non-oleaginous paste are both successively increased in successive stages of the treatment.
