Abstract

111,000. Davis, R. H. Jan. 19, 1917. Respirators.-Breathing-apparatus adapted to be used either as a self-contained regenerator or as a respirator comprises a mask a connected by a three-way valve c to tubes f, g communicating with chambers h, m containing respectively potash or other carbonic oxide absorbent and an absorbent for deleterious atmospheric gases. Communicating with the vessel h by means of a fitting j are a breathing bag i and an oxygen cylinder k, a relief valve l being provided. An expiratory valve o is carried by the lateral tube e of the three-way valve. The potash may be replaced by a substance, such as oxylithe, which generates oxygen in addition to absorbing carbonic oxide, the oxygen cylinder being reduced in size or dispensed with. In operation, the valve c is turned to put the mask into communication either with the regenerating chamber or the respirator m as may be required. In a modification, one chamber only is employed, the contents being adapted to absorb both exhaled carbonic oxide and poisonous constituents in the atmosphere, suitable valves being inserted between the expiratory valve and the mask, and the absorption chamber, the breathing hag, and the oxygen cylinder.
