Abstract

A pigment grade, crystalline, acicular titanium dioxide having a cross-sectional diameter of 0.05-0.2 m , a length of 0.3-1.5 m , with a length: diameter ratio of 3-15, is prepared by mixing an aqueous colloidal suspension of TiO2, nucleating seed particles, prepared by heating e.g. at 60-90 DEG C. for 4-60 mins. an aqueous solution of TiCl4 having a Cl-/Ti ratio of 1.5-4, preferably 1.6-2.3, a pH of 0.3-0.7 and a Ti concentration of 8-30 g./l., with an acidic TiCl4 solution having Cl-/Ti \sP 4, H+/T. \sP 4, a Ti concentration of 15-85 g./l., the colloidal solution providing 4-10 wt. per cent of the Ti values in the mixture, heating the mixture at \sF 190 DEG C., preferably 210-260 DEG C., for 0.5-5 hrs., under an autogenous pressure to hydrolyse the TiCl4 and separating the Ti values precipitated. The product may be subsequently calcined at 700-900 DEG C. for 0.5-6 hrs. The product has a high tinting strength and hiding power, e.g. a tinting strength of 1850 to 1900 when hydrolysed at 190 DEG C. for 2-5 hrs. without calcination, or 1950-2150 at 210-260 DEG C. for 0.5-5 hrs.
