Abstract

The invention comprises the reaction products of a polyalkylene imine, suitably polyethyleneimine and a cyclic ester formed from a polyalcohol and carbonic or sulphurous acid. These compounds are prepared by mixing an aqueous solution of the polyalkylene imine with the cyclic ester, preferably in equimolecular proportions, and stirring the resultant mixture at a temperature not exceeding 50 DEG C. until a homogeneous solution is obtained. Suitable cyclic esters are ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate and glycidol. The examples describe the reaction between polyethylene imine and ethylene carbonate, and polyethylene imine and propylene carbonate.ALSO:The reaction products of a polyalkylene imine and a cyclic ester formed from a polyalcohol and carbonic acid are useful as preservatives for concentrated solutions of H2O2. They are also sequestering agents for calcium in water and examples describe the addition of said reaction products to solutions of FeCl3, AlCl3, CuSO4, MnCl2 and CoCl2 at various pH values to obtain, in most cases, clear solutions.
