Abstract

Ketenes are prepared by passing a ketenizable substance (as defined in the Specification) in two streams A and B in parallel first through a preheating zone 18, then through a super-heating zone 16, passing the superheated streams through separate pyrolysing zones 14 and 12, and finally uniting the two streams, said streams being passed through the pre- and super-heating zones along similar interwinding spiral paths 38, 36 and 48, 50. Further detail of these spiral paths is in Fig. 4 (not reproduced). The ketene produced may be passed on through a condenser to a reaction chamber containing an aliphatic acid whereby acid anhydrides are produced. This reaction may be controlled by a differntial vapour pressure transmitter which regulates automatically the feed of the acid (see Fig. 3, not reproduced). The pyrolysis of <PICT:1109523/C2/1> acetic acid to ketene, and its further reaction with acetic acid to give acetic anhydride is exemplified. Other ketenizable substances are acetone (yielding ketene); ethyl acetate (yielding ketene and ethanol); propionic acid (yielding methyl ketene CH3CH=C=O); and acetic anhydride (yielding ketene and acetic acid).
