Abstract

1,109,292. Sliding clasp fasteners. TALON Inc. 18 May, 1965, No. 21076/65. Heading E2S. An open ended sliding clasp fastener includes a length of fastener chain comprising a pair of stringer tapes 12 each of which has a coiled filament secured to a beaded edge thereof to provide a continuous series of spaced apart interengageable fastener elements adapted to be engaged and disengaged in response to the movement of a slider 20 therealong towards the closed and open ends respectively, the fastener also including a combined tape end and bottom stop 30 joining the tapes 12 at one end thereof, and a combined top stop unit comprising two top stops 26, 28 and tape end 24 carried by each tape 12 at the opposite open end, each of said stops being formed of thermoplastic material in situ on said length of fastener chain, and a channel portion 42 carried by at least one of said top stops for frictionally co-operating with the slider when the latter is moved to its fully closing position to retain the slider in this position. As described the portion 42 comprises a well 44 intermediate the top stops 26, 28 which receives a detent depending from the upper wing of the slider. The fastener is made from a continuous length of fastener chain, provided with sliders at given intervals, by providing an overlying strip of thermoplastic material for said chain at intervals intermediate adjacent sliders, said strip having a length substantially equal to the width across said pair of stringer tapes and including an enlarged central portion which overlies said fastener elements; simultaneously applying heat and pressure to said strip for impregnating said stringer tapes with said material to form a reinforcing bottom stop and tape end 30 for one fastener and a reinforced top stop unit and tape end 24 for the next fastener, the heat and pressure forming of said central portion a bottom stop 32 for said one fastener and the pair of opposed top stops 26, 28 and the channel portion 42 for said next fastener said top stops overlying the tapes adjacent the fastener elements and the channel portion 42 including the well 44; transversely severing said one fastener from the next fastener and finally cutting the channel portion 42 longitudinally so that the top stops 26, 28 lie sideby-side and the portion 42 is carried by at least one of the top stops. In the embodiment shown the longitudinal cutting divides the channel portion 42 and the well 44 equally. The application of heat and pressure also forms strengthening shoulders 38. 40, 46, 48 on the tape end members, and a scrap portion .34 which is punched out during the transverse cutting. In a second embodiment. Fig. 11, the channel portion 142 is carried wholly by one of the top stops 128, the scrap portion 134 is reduced. and the bottom tape end is strengthened by a tapered portion 136 instead of shoulders.
