Abstract

<FORM:1108756/C2/1> <FORM:1108756/C2/2> Novel 3,a -dialkyltyrosine esters of the Formula I, wherein R is C1- 3 alkyl, R1 is C1- 4 alkyl an R2 is C1- 2 alkyl, and their acid-addition salts, are prepared by condensing a compound of the Formula II, or a salt thereof, with a compound of the formula Y-R1, wherein X and Y are atoms or groups which react together to form an ester linkage, and optionally converting the product into an acid-addition salt. 3,a - Dimethyltyrosine is prepared by reacting 4 - hydroxy - 3 - methylphenylacetone with sodium cyanide and ammonium carbonate to form 5 - methyl - 5 - (41 - hydroxy - 31 - methyl-benzyl) hydantoin and hydrolysing this compound in the presence of sodium hydroxide. Pharmaceutical compositions, which have antihypertensive and antipyretic activity and which are also capable of blocking the alerting effects of amphetamine, for oral, parenteral or topical administration, comprise a compound of the invention together with a carrier.
