1,108,632. Tow forming; filament guides; non-woven fabrics. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. Sept., 1965 [10 Sept., 1964], No. 37014/64. Headings D1D, D1F and D1R. Apparatus, for forming a tow from one or more sheets of textile yarns or filaments comprises a pair 1, 2, 3 or 4 of parallel lease rods (6, 7) (Fig. 2 not shown) mounted parallel to a diameter of a rotatably adjustable circular carriage 5. the plane of the carriage being perpendicular to the sheet or sheet of yarns or filaments. The yarns or filaments are passed between the rods of a pair and by rotatably adjusting the carriage 5, the width of the tow issuing therefrom can be selected. The rods (6, 7) Fig. 2, are bent and joined so as to have common mounting elements 10, 11. These are rotatably received in blocks 12, 13 mounted on the carriage 5 and may be locked in an adjusted position by screws 15 such rotation causes the filament path to be more or less sinuous and thus adjusts the tension of the filament passing through the bars. More than one pair of rods may be provided, e.g. four pairs, each pair producing a separate tow. Carriage 5 is rotatable on a plate 16 adjustably mounted between side plates 20. 21. In Fig. 3 (not shown) tow from the lease bars is converted into a felt by rollers (50), spreader 51, infra-red heaters (52) to relax the material and needling apparatus (57, 58. 59, 60). Suitable filaments for the felt are crimped poly(ethylene terephthalate) or filaments which have a potential crimp which may be brought out e.g. by application and subsequent removal of a wetting agent, e.g. rayon having an unbalanced skin structure or nylon having disulphide and polyalkylene sulphide cross-links. Another suitable filament is rayon which can be crimped by cross-linking, e.g. by using a resin or steam-setting treatment in place of a heat setting treatment.
