Abstract

1,108,490. Friction clutches. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. 8 Dec., 1965 [30 Dec., 1964], No. 52127/65. Heading F2C. A double disc clutch assembly comprises presser plates D, C urged apart by a Belleville spring E to clamp driven discs 24, 25 against a driving flywheel A and a cover member B. The clutches are successively released by radial levers 26 pivoted at 59 on the member B and connected by tension struts 71 to the presser plate D. Stops 72 on the struts 71 are adjustable to compensate for wear. The levers 26 actuate the presser plate C through compression struts 28 having a lost-motion connection with the presser plate so that the plate D is released first. The presser plates are connected to the driving member B by flexible tangential straps (75, 76) (Fig. 5,not shown). The Belleville spring has scallops (51) (Fig. 10, not shown) extending from its inner periphery to assist circulation of cooling air.
