Abstract
1,108,434. Reciprocating pumps and motors. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. May 10, 1965 [April 3, 1964], No.13804/64. Heading F1A. The valve plate 19 of an axial piston pump or motor has arcuate ports 20a with which the cylinder ports 16 communicate during rotation of the block 11. The arcuate ports 20a connect to recesses 23 on the opposite side of the plate 19 through arcuate ports 20b and the recesses house sealing means comprising a metal ring 24 and on "O" ring 25 which is under compression. The pressure of liquid in the cylinders 13 acts on the shoulders 26 in recesses 23 and the shoulders 17 in the cylinders to provide a resultant force tending to urge the block 11 against a shoulder 27 on the shaft 12. The shaft is thereby forced against a thrust bearing 28. The area of contact between the faces of the block 11 and valve plate 19 is substantially larger than the area of the recesses 23 such that the pressures applied thereto would tend to separate the contacting faces but for the force exerted by the sealing means 24, 25. At a predetermined pressure the force exerted by the sealing means is overcome and the contacting faces tend to separate and allow the escape of liquid.
