Abstract

[Also in Division H2] An arrangement for detecting alternating current flow, e.g. an earth leakage current, comprises a transformer T1 having a core whose degree of saturation depends on the current to be detected flowing through a first primary winding C 1 , C 2 , a second primary winding A 1 , A 2 , energized by A.C. of a frequency higher than that of the current to be detected, a secondary winding inductively coupled to both primary windings and connected to energize a relay RL when the flux produced by the first primary winding does not saturate the core sufficiently to reduce the inductive coupling between the second primary winding and the secondary winding. The normal higher frequency output of the secondary winding maintains the relay operated until earth leakage occurs when the relay drops out to effect the operation of signalling or control means. The secondary winding may be connected to the relay through a transistorized amplifier 3, a Zener diode 4, an auxiliary transformer T2 and a bridge rectifier 5.
