Abstract

Water-insoluble azo dyes are formed on fibres of cellulose or natural silk by treating the fibres in an alkaline bath which contains an arylamide of 5-hydroxy-1,2,1\sv,2\sv-benzocarbazole-4-carboxylic acid and a tetrazoamino compound of the formula <FORM:1107893/D1-D2/1> wherein X is H or an alkyl or alkoxy having 1 or 2 carbon atoms, R is a C1-C2 alkyl group. Alk is an alkylene of 1-2 C atoms and Y is -COOMe or -SO3Me where Me is the monovalent radical of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, and a wetting or dispersing agent and subsequently causing the formation of the dyestuff by treatment with an acid agent below 40 DEG C. The bath may contain an organic or inorganic salt, e.g. sodium chloride, phosphate, sulphate or acetate. The acid agent may be an inorganic or organic acid or a mixture thereof and the acid treatment is preferably carried out in the presence of a buffer at pH 5.5-7. Examples are given of dyeing cotton.
