A washing machine comprises a programme control device, a gas-heated heat-exchanger communicating with the tub via conduits, and a pump for circulating washing liquid during washing through the conduits and heatexchanger, gas being supplied to the heatexchanger by a valve arranged to be controlled, during operation of the machine, by the programme control device. A rotary drum (3) is journalled in a tub (2) suspended by springs in a casing (1) having in its front wall an aperture (5) giving access to a circular door (6) in the front wall of tub (2). A recess (4) in the front wall of casing (1) is closed by a hinged door (9) on the inner wall of which is mounted a heat-exchanger 17 adapted to be heated by a gas burner 28. Heatexchanger 17 is connected by a pipe 22 to the base of tub (2), and by a pipe 23 to tub (2) above the maximum water level. A pump 21 in pipe 22 is driven by a motor 20 mountedon door (9). A pressure-responsive device 24 in pipe 23 is adapted to close a switch 25 on operation of pump 21. Burner 28 is connected to a gas pipe 27 containing an electromagnetic valve 26. Motor 20 and valve 26 are controlled by programme control means 30, 29 respectively, burner 28 being ignited, when valve 26 is energised via closed switch 25, by a pilot jet 32. A thermostat 11 in tub (2) opens a main switch 40 at a predetermined maximum temperature. Pipes 22, 23, 27 and the electric leads pass through a hollow hinge pin 19 of door (9). In a modification, water is circulated through heat-exchanger 17 by the main drainage pump (14), the main drain pipe (16) being closed by a electromagnetic valve (45) during a washing phase. The burner may be ignited electrically. The tub may also be heated electrically.
