Abstract

1,003,163. Washing machines. STANLEY NEWBERY Ltd., and S. NEWBERY. Sept. 17, 1963 [Aug. 21, 1962], No. 32037/62. Heading D1A. A horizontal rotary drum washing and spindrying machine has mounted below the drum 1 a water tank 3 which is used both to store hot washing, water for the machine and to provide a sufficient weight to anchor the machine during spindrying. The water in the tank 3 is heated by immersion heaters 6, 7 controlled by thermostats, and the level of the water is kept constant by a ball valve or pressure-sensitive device (not shown). Water is fed from the tank to the drum by a centrifugal pump 4 and the washing and drying cycle may be automatically controlled including the addition of detergent. Alternatively, the detergent may be added by hand into a hopper 17 when an indicating light is illuminated. The machine may also be adapted for coin operation and suitable safety devices may be provided to ensure that the machine cannot be started until the hot water tank is charged and the drum door closed and locked, and to prevent the door being opened whilst the drum is rotating.
