Abstract
1,107,310. Laminates. LORD CORPORATION. 15 Nov., 1965 [21 Dec., 1964]. No. 48493/65. Heading B5N. A sound damping structure comprises a sheetmetal base member 1, a layer 3 of stiff viscoelastic damping material adhered to the surface of the member 1, said material having a Young's modulus of elasticity that is substantially less than that of the base member, and a layer 4 of soft compliant carrier material adhered to the outer surface of the layer 3, the material of the second layer 4 having a modulus of elasticity substantially less than that of the material of the layer 3, and having dispersed therein particulate material 5 of specific gravity substanti'ally greater than that of the carrier material. As described the layer 3 is of any well-known damping material such as asphalt, wax, rubber or rubber-like polymers, or other polymeric materials having high mechanical hysteresis or high internal friction, the layer 4 is of the same general type of material but in a less stiff form, and the material 5 is either uniformly dispersed throughout the layer 4 or is segregated in localized pockets in that layer. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 932,430.
