Abstract

A substantially crystalline copolymer of a major proportion of propylene and a minor proportion of 3-methyl-pentene-1 and/or 3-methyl-butene-1 is obtained by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst of (a) a solid crystalline compound of a metal of Groups IV-VIII, the metal being in a lower valency state than its maximum and (b) an organo-metallic compound of a metal of Groups I, II or III, and in the presence of a diluent which is a non-solvent for the component (a) of the catalyst. A molecular weight regulator, e.g. hydrogen, may also be present. In the example, a propylene/3-methylpentene-1 copolymer is obtained using a TiCl3-(C2H3)2AlCl catalyst, n-heptane as diluent, and H2 as the molecular weight regulator. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 995,578.
