Abstract

1,190,492. Olefin block copolymers. DART INDUSTRIES Inc. 19 Jan., 1968 [20 Jan., 1967], No. 3036/68. Heading C3P. An alpha-olefin block copolymer comprises at least two segments, A and B, segment A consisting of a random copolymer of at least two alpha-olefins, at least one of which constitutes 90 to 99 mole per cent of the segment, the segment A constituting 60 to 96% of the block copolymer, segment B consisting of a homopolymer of an alpha-olefin having from 2 to 9 carbon atoms and constituting 40 to 4% of the composition. Both segments exhibit a crystalline structure, as indicated by X-ray analysis. Segment A has a molecular weight of 50,000 to 500,000, while segment B has a molecular weight of 20,000 to 2,000,000. The polymers are obtained by a conventional sequential polymerization in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst. The process is normally carried out in the presence of hydrogen as a molecular weight regulator. The exemplified copolymers are all poly-(propylene-b-[ethyleneco-propylene]). Also mentioned specifically are poly - (ethylene - b - [ethylene - co - propylene]), poly - (ethylene-b - [ethylene - co - butene- 13]), poly - (4 - methyl - pentene - 1 - b - [hexene - 1 - co - 4 - methyl - pentene - 1]) and poly - (4- methyl - pentene - 1 - b - [octene - 1 - co - 4 - methyl - pentene - 1]). The block copolymers resulting from the process may mix with homo- or copolymers of the alpha-olefins.
