Abstract
1,106,849. Conjugate filaments. JAPAN EXLAN CO. Ltd. 2 July, 1965 [2 July, 1964], No. 28243/65. Heading B5B. In a method of spinning multicomponent fibres from two different materials by extruding them through a common orifice, the two materials are partly intermingled at the interfacial area between them by causing the two streams of the materials to meet or collide with each other at an obtuse angle or at 180 degrees to produce a turbulent flow prior to extrusion through the orifice. Apparatus comprises means for supplying the two materials to first channels, which merge by second channels into a common passage communicating with an orifice, the second channels being narrower than the first channels, and meeting at an obtuse angle or at 180 degrees at the common passage. In one embodiment (Figs. 1 and 3), a spinneret plate 2, provided with rows of orifices 1 is mounted on guide plate 4 having passages 3 in the same number of rows as the orifices. Spinning solutions are supplied to separate chambers on the inlet section of sleeve 5, which is provided, at its outlet, with narrow first channels 12, 12<SP>1</SP> defined by partitions 11, the arrangement being such that the two spinning solutions are supplied to alternate channels. In operation, the spinning solutions flowing down alternate channels 12, 12<SP>1</SP> pass into second channels 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, where turbulence is created, and thence, in laminar flow, with a partly intermingled or blended interface, through common passage 3 to the orifices 1. In Fig. 3, between the second channels 13, 13<SP>1</SP> is 180 degrees. In a further embodiment (not shown), an enlarged space (14) is provided at the junction of channels 13, 13<SP>1</SP> to promote intermingling. The conjugate fibres so produced have a reduced tendency to datamination. In an Example, 10% solutions of two acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate copolymers in 45% aqueous sodium thiocyanate are spun, using the apparatus of Fig. 3, into 10% aqueous sodium thiocyanate at - 3‹ C.
