Abstract

1,106,672. Tensioning apparatus, rollers; sewing machines. INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 29 March, 1966 [31 Dec., 1964; 4 Feb., 1965], Nos. 52939/64 and 4809/64. Headings DID and D1G. Thread-controlling means for use, e.g. in sewing machines comprise a rotatable member biased into a locked position in frictional engagement with a body, and fluid pressure means operable to part said member from said body for rotation, the arrangement being such that a thread engaged with said member is prevented from longitudinal movement when said member is locked, and is free to move longitudinally to rotate said member when the latter is parted from said body. As shown, rollers 10, 11 are seated in semicylindrical recesses in blocks 12, 13 biased together by springs 14, whereby the contacting rollers are locked in position to prevent longitudinal movement of thread 17 passing therebetween. If compressed air is applied to passages 15 opening in the base of each recess, the blocks 12, 13 are biased part and the rollers are free to rotate to allow longitudinal movement of the thread. The latter passes between a plunger 20 and an anvil 22, uniform air pressure being applied to plunger 20 for applying uniform tension to the thread. The thread passes to the rollers 10, 11 over a roller 28 carried by a plunger 25 biased outwardly by a spring 26 to draw off thread from a supply 31 when the rollers 10, 11 are locked. When rollers 10, 11 are faced, air pressure is applied via a channel 30 to plunger 25 to move, the latter inwardly to face the thread previously draw off by roller 28. In a modification, Fig. 3, not shown, interengaging rollers (35), (36) are seated in semi-cylindrical recesses in a block (39), the arrangement being such that the rollers are just free to rotate. Channels (40), (41) enter the bases of the recesses holding rollers (35) and (36) respectively. When compressed air is applied to channel (40), roller (36) is frictionally locked against its recess to prevent longitudinal movement of a thread passing between the rollers. When compressed air is applied to channel (41) also, roller (36) is freed and the rollers can rotate to permit longitudinal movement of the thread.
