Abstract

692,762. Sliding clasp fasteners. NAEGELE, K. F. Oct. 18, 1951 [Aug. 6, 1951 ], No. 24342/51. Class 44 In a machine for making sliding-clasp fasteners, fastener elements are clamped on to a tape which is advanced intermittently by means of a feed cylinder having a groove or grooves which engage the elements already clamped to the tape, each turn of the groove or grooves having one part helically disposed and one part annularly disposed on the peripheral surface of the cylinder, a second cylinder, either plain, or provided with corresponding grooves of opposite hand being arranged parallel to the first and acting to hold the elements in the turns of the grooves. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, two pairs of grooved cylinders 6, 12 and 5, 11 are mounted on two parallel shafts geared to rotate in opposite directions, and mechanism 10 for clamping the elements on the tape 8 is mounted between the two cylinders of each pair. The elements are supplied from a magazine 1, and rest on a rail 3, Fig. 4, with their lateral edges engaging the grooves of cylinders 5, 6. The tape 8, supplied at 7, is pressed into the spread feet of the elements by means of a resiliently mounted toothed disc 9. The clamping device 10 may be of any suitable construction, but that shown in Fig. 4 comprises annular rolls 14, 15 running freely in narrow holders 16, 17 extending around more than 180 degrees of the periphery of the rolls, and carried by a base 18 which is reciprocated vertically by a tappet rod 20. Upward movement of the rolls closes the feet of the elements, which are held at the point of operation by a U-shaped counter support 28, on to the beaded edge of the tape. After attachment, the elements are engaged by the grooves of the rollers 11, 12, which effect the required intermittent movement of the tape. The spacing of the grooves on the cylinders is equal to the spacing of the elements on the tape, or to a multiple thereof where multiple start grooves are used. Grooves may be provided on one pair of cylinders only, the other pair being plain. In a modification, two grooved cylinders only, disposed in parallel relationship, act as feed cylinders engaging the elements already to the tape by suitable spacing and clamping mechanism arranged at one end of the cylinders.
