Abstract
1,1,1-Trichloroethane is prepared by a process comprising the steps:- (a) Thermally chlorinating vaporized 1,1-dichloroethane with elemental chlorine. (b) Separating hydrogen chloride substantially free of 1,1,1-trichloroethane by condensing the chlorinated organic products from step (a), thereby providing a partial condensate comprising 1,1,1-trichloroethane. (c) Reacting vinyl chloride with hydrogen chloride comprising that derived from step (b). (d) Condensing a partial condensate comprising 1,1-dichloroethane from the products of step (c). (e) Separating in a common fractionation train 1,1-dichloroethane and 1,1,1-trichloroethane from the partial condesates of steps (b) and (d) and recycling all or part of the 1,1-dichloroethane to step (a).
