Abstract

Polymers suitable for use in forming pressure-sensitive elastomeric coatings are copolymers of a monomer consisting of a mixture of N-alkyl maleamic acids, in which the alkyl groups preferably average from 10 to 24 carbon atoms, and a monomer consisting of an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate in which the alkyl group preferably contains 1 to 12 carbon atoms. A suitable polymer specified was prepared by copolymerizing in aq. emulsion using a redox catalyst (potassium persulphate and sodium bisulphite), a mixture of N-alkyl maleamic acids with ethyl acrylate and two-ethylhexyl acrylate added to the polymerization charge in the mol. ratio 1:1:4, respectively. The maleamic acids are prepared by amidating 1 mol. of maleic anhydride with 1 mol. of a mixture of alkyl primary amines in which the alkyl group is attached to the nitrogen atom by a tertiary carbon atom marketed as "Primines" 81-R. The dried, coagulated polymer was then dispersed in a mixture of toluene, n-hexane and isopropyl alcohol.ALSO:A porous pressure-sensitive adhesive tape comprises a backing of porous non-woven fabric having a retiform adhesive surface coating of a pressure-sensitive elastomeric polymer, the adhesive being substantially confined to the fibres exposed at the surface of the backing and offering substantially no impediment of passage of air of vapour through the pores of the backing. The polymer may be a copolymer of N-alkyl maleamic acids, in which the alkyl groups preferably average from 10 to 24 carbon atoms, and a monomer consisting of an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate in which the alkyl groups preferably contain 1 to 12 carbon atoms. Other polymers are homoacrylate polymers of alkyl acrylates in which the alkyl group contains 4 to 12 carbon atoms, co-polymers of such acrylates with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer such as acrylonitrile, itaconic acid, glycol diacrylates, vinyl acetate or acrylic acid, and elastomeric silicone polymers. The coating may be applied to the backing by spraying a dispersion or a solution of the adhesive polymer in a volatile solvent so that droplets at the time of deposit have a solid content of 45 to 65% by weight the fabric may be composed of fibres having a denier of from 1.5 to 5, having a weight of from 30 to 50 grams per square yard and the weight of adhesive may be from 20 to 50 grams per square yard of fabric.
