A method of removing liquid from a suspension therein of particulate material comprises the steps of (a) passing the suspension through a plate filter press until the outflow of liquid from the press is slow or stopped, (b) shutting off the infeed of the suspension, and (c) thereafter pressing the plates of the press together against the resilient opposition of gaskets disposed between the plates, whereby further liquid is forced out of the filter cake which has collected 'between the plates; the filter press necessarily comprises a plurality of plates, adjacent pairs of plates supporting two filter cloths and each plate having at least one peripheral gasket of elastomeric material joined to it so that two filter cloths are gripped between each pair of adjacent plate edge portions by the gaskets, and means for pressing the plates together. As shown, clay slip or slurry is introduced at 21 to a press having plates 3 which have been sealed against each other to form chambers 16 (though right-hand chamber 16 is shown unsealed for illustrative purposes) by hydraulic cylinder 9 and ram 10. When the filtration rate (e.g. at 22) is low or stopped, the cylinder and ram are actuated to press the plates together against the opposition of rubber gaskets 14. As shown, each plate 3 has a gasket 14 secured by adhesive to each of its rims 11. Alternatively a rubber sleeve having two side members which extend over the rims 11 may be slipped over the outside edge of each plate 3. Each filter cloth 17 is secured at its centre to a plate by a screwed collar 20.
