Abstract

1,106,032. Arc extinguishing in switches. E. MARX. 2 April, 1965 [2 April, 1964; 13 Feb., 1965], No. 14060/65. Heading H1N. In an arc extinguishing chamber the arc is driven by a flow of quenching liquid into a narrow gap adjacent to an insulating wall through which the arc cannot pass but the liquid can. In a first embodiment a perforated cylinder 24 is grooved, 25, to guide a bridging contact 2 mounted on the end of a second perforated cylinder 23. An explosive device 8 drives a piston 7 upwards compressing liquid above it to drive the cylinder 23 upwards at a greater speed. As the cylinder 23 enters cylinder 24 liquid blasts through channels 9 to drive the arcs drawn in grooves 25 against the wall of cylinder 24. Piston 7 moves, and therefore the blast continues, after contact 2 reaches its open position. The bore 28 of cylinder 23 is tapered to equalize blast pressure over the length of the arcs. The motion of contact 2 is damped as a piston 34 enters a bore 11. The contacts are reclosed by acting on a piston 12. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the cylinder 23 is replaced by a solid piston (15); the contact 2 may be Z-shaped for higher voltages (Fig. 15, not shown). In a further modification (Fig. 9, not shown) cylinder 24 is enclosed by a jacket (44) containing a gas which is compressed as piston (15) moves upwards and provides the reclosing force. In another modification (Figs. 11, 12, not shown) a U-shaped moving contact (58) is moved in bores in the wall of cylinder (24). In further embodiments (Figs. 5, 13, not shown) the arc is drawn between contacts separating adjacent to a flat wall (24, 64). In another embodiment (Fig. 14, not shown) cylinder (63) is enclosed by a body (61) and differential pistons (62) assist the flow of liquid.
