Abstract

1,105,790. Coating apparatus. F. DECK and N. KEIM. 20 Oct., 1966 [6 May, 1966], No. 47073/66. Heading B2L. A paint applier comprises a roller 4, a shank 1 provided with a handle 2 at one end and bent at the other end so as to lie at right angles to the axis of the handle to form a spindle for the roller 4, and a cover plate 8 carried separately from the roller and mounted in position adjacent the free end of the roller, the plane of the cover plate being at right angles to the axis of the roller and the cover plate having mounted thereon a flat brush 11, the bristles of which project beyond the edge of the cover plate 8 and across the end of the roller. The cover plate 8 may be formed of two discs 9, 10, the inner disc 10 being larger than the outer disc 9 so that it projects slightly beyond the edge thereof. Preferably the cover plate 8 is mounted at one end of a resilient strip 7 the other end of which is fixed to a grip 5 having a longitudinal square guideway, the grip being mounted on and longitudinally movable along, a portion of the shank 1 having the form of a twisted square rod, such that on longitudinal movement of the grip 5 the cover plate 8 is withdrawn from its mounted position adjacent the free end of the roller to a neutral position remote from the roller. A spring loaded ball device may be provided in the grip 5 for co-operating with groove 12 in shank 1 to lock the grip in the withdrawn position of the cover plate 8. The cover plate may be detachable and is preferably formed of a plastics material or of plastics covered metal.
