Abstract

The impact strength of polystyrene is increased by mixing with a linear, random or block, solution copolymer of a conjugated diene and a monovinyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon. The block or random copolymer may be formed by polymerizing (i) 1,3-butadiene and (ii) styrene, 3-vinyltoluene, 1- or 2-vinylnaphthalene or 2,4-dimethylstyrene and optionally (iii) divinylbenzene, in n-hexane in the presence of n-butyllithium and tetrahydrofuran; and then adding a mixture of C16- 18 saturated and unsaturated fatty acids to inactivate the catalyst and 2,6-ditert.-butyl-4-methylphenol as antioxidant. The polystyrene and copolymer may be blended in the molten state.
