A lighting fixture for roadways consists of a lamp 5 enclosed in a light shield 4, which may be a reflector, so positioned that the light is emitted at least below the horizontal and, at least in one vertical plane, within a limiting angle, and a receptacle 9 positioned to collect rainwater and which is so shaped and so positioned with respect to the shielding element that the collected rainwater refracts the light to increase the angle of emission. The outer walls 11 of the receptacle may have light spreading convolutions. Drainage apertures 19 may be provided to permit the escape of rainwater at a controlled rate.
