Abstract

[Also in Division B5] One or more sheets of filtering material 14, which may be glass fibre, woven metal or plastics, felted nylon fibres discontinuously bonded on one side by latex, or foamed polyurethane, are attached to a frame of thick wire 10 or angle metal (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) by heating the frame and dipping it in powdered polyethylene, polypropylene or cellulose acetate-butyrate to form a molten coating 12 after which the material 14 and the coated frame are pressed together until the coating has set. In Fig. 3, an expanded metal grid (16) which acts as a backing for the filtering material is also heated and dipped and the set coating attaches both grid and filtering material to the frame. In Figs. 7, 8 (not shown) the frame has a plastics handle and supporting spigots injection moulded on to the coating. Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) illustrate the press used in manufacture, comprising a counterweighted upper platen (18) pivoted on a frame, movable into the horizontal position by low-pressure pneumatic jack (24) and securable in that position by pneumatic-actuated bolts (38). After platen (18) is so secured, a horizontal lower platen (20) is raised by high-pressure pneumatic jacks (26, 28) to press the filtering material and frame between the platens, which are flat but faced with sponge rubber coated with glass fibre and P.T.F.E.
