In a nuclear fuel assembly, parallel cylindrical, fuel elements are mounted axially in a square section box, open at the top and bottom to permit longitudinal coolant flow. Helically twisted strips are secured together and mounted longitudinally in the box to provide both a supporting lattice for the fuel elements and a coolant flow direction control system. The twisted strips at the lattice perimeter are shaped and rigidly secured to the box inner surface.
