Abstract

Decarbonylation and dehydration products are obtained by contacting an a -hydroxyl-amino-carboxylic acid with a strong acid at a suitable temperature to evolve CO and H2O. Suitable acids are H3PO4, polyphosphoric acid, HCl, H2SO4, a mixture of H2SO4 and oleum, or a mixture of liquid SO2 and SO3. In examples, a - hydroxylamino - cyclohexane carboxylic acid and -cycloheptane carboxylic acid give e -caprolactam and o -oenantholactam respectively, a - hydroxylamino - valeric acid gives butyramide and a -hydroxylamino-isobutyric acid gives acetoxime or N-methylacetamide, depending on the temperature.
