Abstract

1,104,905. Supercharging I. C. engines. TRW Inc. Feb. 23, 1966, No.7991/66. Heading F1B. An exhaust gas driven turbine of a turbocharger, Fig. 1 (not shown) is by-passed by a valve 21 which is moved to its open (full line) position at full throttle or high intake manifold pressure conditions. A line 26 leading from a chamber 24 communicates with the carburetter downstream of the throttle valve but upstream of the supercharging compressor so that when the throttle is closed or partly open, the suction acting on a diaphragm 25 maintains the valve 21 open. When the throttle is opened fully, the suction in chamber 24 is insufficient to prevent a spring 27, which is stronger than an opposing spring 31, from closing the valve 21 and bringing the supercharger into action. Should the pressure in the intake manifold, which communicates with a chamber 28, exceed a given value, a diaphragm 29 moves to the right and coacts with a collar 34 to open the valve 21. The line 26 may communicate with the carburetter at a point which is upstream of the closed throttle valve but which is exposed to the pressure downstream of the throttle when the latter is opened. In this case the supercharger will operate during engine idling.
