Abstract
A photochromic composition comprises a mixture of an organic polymer and a transition metal compound having the stoichiometric formula MXmOn(OR)p, where M is a transition metal (Ti, Zr, W, Hf, Ta, Nb, V, Cr), X is a halogen and R is either one of certain alkyl or aryl radicles or <FORM:1104823/C4-C5/1> where R1 is one of certain alkyl or aryl radicles; m, p are 0-6, but at least one is 1 or more, and n is 0-2; at least trace amounts of free or combined oxygen must be present in addition to the compound. The preferred polymer is polymethylmethacrylate but many others including polystyrenes, polyamides and polyurethanes are mentioned as suitable. Typical transition metal compounds among many are WCl6, NbCl5, VO2Br, HfI3(OC6H5). A solvent such as dioxane or ethyl acetate (but not water) may be added and also a bleaching addition consisting of a metal salt of (e.g. the chloride) Fe, Tl, Mn, Ce, Rh, Ir, typically at 5% of the transition compound; the additional oxygen may be present in either the solvent or the catalyst. 127 examples are given. The compositions may be used for example in window panes, wind-screens, sunglasses, memory devices and optical masks.
