Abstract

1,104,778. Resilient mountings. LORD CORPORATION. 20 Sept., 1966 [29 Nov., 1965] No. 41961/66. Heading F2S. [Also in Division B3] A resilient mounting consists of a loadcarrying element comprising a mesh of metal wires which is initially compressed into a block by pressure applied along one axis of the block stressing the wires beyond their yield point to develop a stable spring rate along said axis, the block being further compressed transverse to said axis to stress the wires beyond their yield point and develop a stable spring rate transverse to said axis without affecting the spring rate along said one axis. As shown, metal mesh annuli 8, 9, precompressed axially and radially according to the invention, are housed in a cupshaped casing 1 having an inwardly extending flange 4 and a cover 5 and are separated by the flange 7 of an inner cylindrical supported member 2. In a die construction for compressing the wire mesh axially and radially, Fig. 3, not shown, a mesh ring (13) is first compressed axially between the faces (15), (14), respectively of a stationary member (10) and an inner member (11) bolted to it, and then radial pressure is applied to the ring (13) by means of an annular piston (18) and a ring of elastomer (16) which acts hydraulically. The radial compression doubles the density of the mesh element. In another arrangement for radially swaging an annulus (19) of metal mesh material, which has previously been formed by axial compression and which fits over a centre member (21) of the die, Fig. 4, not shown, the annulus (19) is forced axially by a plunger (23), indirectly through a ring of elastomer (22), and a split washer (24), down a tapered section (25) of an outer stationary member, the primary change of the annulus being due to the radial compression.
