Abstract

1,104,717. Plug boards; two-part couplings. MOLEX PRODUCTS CO. 6 July, 1965, No. 28617/65. Heading H2E. A terminal assembly comprises a supporting board 70 having an opening which can receive a number of connectors 20, each of which makes contact with its adjacent connector. The opening has sides having a repeating pattern of recesses, each recess being shaped to receive a connector. Each connector is formed from sheet metal and is bent into an approximate U-shape, one arm of the U having an extension 28 and 32 to grip a cable and the other arm 54 of the U being resiliently movable towards and away from the first arm so that when two connectors are inserted in adjacent recesses of the board 70, the arm 54 of one engages the back of the adjacent connector. The connectors may have protuberances 64 which snap behind the lower surface of the board and lock the connector in position. In a second embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the movable arm of the U is formed with two forwardly facing flanges which make line contact with the adjacent connector instead of surface contact as in the first embodiment. In a further embodiment (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown) the movable part of the connector is formed by bending round side flanges of the first arm. In the embodiment of Fig. 12 (not shown), the opening in the board is shaped similarly on opposite sides of the longitudinal centre line but offset longitudinally, the connectors in this case being inserted so that they lie opposite each other across this central line but offset so that each connector engages a part of two opposite ones. With this arrangement a bus bar may be detachably secured to the board to extend along the longitudinal central line. The connectors may generally be inserted from either side of the board, however in one embodiment described the opening takes the form of a blind hole.
