Abstract

Iron oxide pigments are made by mixing an aq. ferrous salt solution with an aq. 25% wt. NH3 solution to precipitate Fe(OH)2, this is oxidized to the ferric state and then the product is oxidized at 60-80 DEG C. in the presence of metallic iron, a hexacyanoferrate (II) salt and an oxidizing agent. The resultant green iron oxide pigment is separated and dried. The green pigment can be converted to a red iron oxide pigment by heating to 280-600 DEG C. The oxidizing agent may be oxygen, air, potassium chlorate, a perchlorate or hydrogen peroxide. Part of the ferrous salt to be used can be introduced together with the hexacyanoferrate (II) salt.
