Abstract

2 - Hydroxy - 3,5,41 - tribromodiphenyl ether (see Division C2) is used as a germicide in soap compositions. A synergistic effect is obtained if the compound is used in association with another germicide of the formula <FORM:1104695/C4-C5/1> in which X1 and X2 are chlorine or bromine atoms and R is a chlorine- or bromine-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon radical. Products effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria are obtained. Experimental results are given of the use of the diphenyl ether derivative alone and in association with 3,4,41-trichlorocarbanilide.ALSO:The invention comprises 2-hydroxy-3,5,41-tribromodiphenyl ether and its preparation by brominating 2-hydroxydiphenyl ether in acetic acid. An example is given. The product is useful as a germicide (see Divisions A5 and C5).ALSO:2-hydroxy-3,5,4\sv-tribromodiphenyl ether (see Division C2) is used as a germicide. A synergistic effect is obtained if the compound is used in association with another germicide of the formula <FORM:1104695/A5-A6/1> in which X1 and X2 are chlorine or bromine atoms and R is a chlorine- or bromine-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon radical. The diphenyl ether derivative, alone or in association with a germicide of the formula above, is effective in soap compositions against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Experimental results are given of the use of the diphenyl ether derivative alone and in association with 3,4,4\sv-trichlorocarbanilide.
